I know how many hours in a day that I knit…I realize it’s not normal. Apparently even something that you love shouldn’t be that consuming.
What was the longest amount of time that you spent knitting (or doing something else that you love) Let’s keep it clean, okay.
I have had marathons that have gone on for days with cat naps while getting ready for a show. It’s amazing to be so consumed by something that the building could be collapsing around me and I would not drop my needles. At one knit meetup at a coffee shop, the fire alarm went off, people started leaving in droves. Our entire knit group did not move.
There was some brief discussion about whether or not we should go outside with everyone else, we voted not to. Since it was an actual fire in the building, the barristas asked us to leave, then they left. We take our knitting very seriously.
Hey Rich….thanks for the latte! Glad you like the yarn…and I think I do have an OCD…I guess it’s a good thing I found a career to work around it.
I think there may be a fine line between some kinds of work and an obsessive-compulsive disorder.
I was speaking with someone the other day about how some elements of our society seem to embrace and promote (often to the exclusion of other forms of lifestyle, approach and/or value, etc.) some kinds of what could be seen as OCD’s.
We agreed that a cultural system, itself, can manifest OCD-like symptoms (and be dragging some of the unwilling/incapable into it). (Imagine a hypothetical knitting class where some kids are prescribed Ritalin. [Is it the kids or the system?])
Consider the famous essay, ‘In Praise of Idleness’, By Bertrand Russell, or the multitude of websites that question such things as capitalism, runaway profit, mass production, and the work ethic, etc..
Love the yarn BTW- thanks again- and am debating either a hat or a scarf. It’s thick! 🙂
Now that’s a girl after my own heart…work through the pain!
I’m not a knitter-you know that, but I have had to do a painting marathon to finish up new work for a show. It was wild. I’d paint for an hour then put ice on my wrist and did this over 4 days. It was worth it though, I had 4 sales! 🙂
Maybe 3 or 4 hours. Mostly as long as it would take to watch a movie. Any more than that would be repetitive injury pain.
Jen
If I didn’t work a full time job that is not in the fibery realm, I’m sure I would knit much more than I do right now. I try to do other things in between, though, because of the “repetitive” injuries that plague me when marathoning. I’m sure you know all about that! I hope your throat is doing better!! 🙂
after filberg i will bear witness that you actually knit in your sleep although thankfully you dont snore.
You know that clearly i am as obsessed as you are.
